Implications of Open Source Swift
Apple is open sourcing Swift in late 2015 and is going to provide a compiler + libraries for iOS/OSX and Linux!!!
This brings some interesting implications, given that:
1) Swift aims to be safe via static type inference and use of optionals
2) Swift aims to be fast and is compiled to LLVM bytecode for deployment. Yet it can also run in an interpreted mode like Go for develoment
3) Swift is multi-paradigm and borrows heavily from modern developments in Object Oriented Programming, Functional Programming, and Generic Programming
4) Swift aims to be interactive and fun using Playgrounds
5) Swift aims to have a modern, concise, and expressive syntax.
5) iOS development can be done natively in Swift
7) Most servers run Linux, so server side code could soon be written in Swift
8) Android runs Linux underneath, so Swift could be bridged to run on Android
9) Someone will undoubtedly create a Swift => JS compiler. Allowing Swift to run in the browser
10) Thus Swift could run everywhere and benefit from a large ecosystem of shared libraries.
11) Swift everywhere is probably not a great idea for most companies, but would be a huge plus for tiny teams looking to move fast and build things.
